Dalbit Studio: A Moonlit Heritage

Dalbit Studio began on a moonlit evening of inspiration. Our story started quietly, in the gentle glow of moonlight, with memories of watching my mother and grandmother artfully stitch 조각보 (jogakbo)—traditional Korean patchwork wrapping cloths—and craft delicate Korean embroidery. Those peaceful nights, softly illuminated by dalbit (“moonlight” in Korean), sparked a lifelong love for Korean crafts and the heartfelt stories they carry.

Generations of Tradition

In Korea, art wasn't just our passion; it was a cherished tradition passed through generations. My grandmother devoted her days to 규방공예 (gyubang gongye), the traditional crafts practiced by Korean women for centuries. Inspired by her, my mother followed in her footsteps, studying art in college and perfecting 동양자수 (traditional Korean embroidery) while raising me. Surrounded by threads, colors, and creativity, I naturally assumed my path would follow in their artistic footsteps.

New Beginnings Abroad

Yet, life took us in another direction. After immigrating to the United States, financial realities compelled us to set aside our artistic dreams. I exchanged art school for a practical education in STEM, while my mother became a tailor, temporarily shelving her embroidery. Those early years felt as though a vital part of ourselves—our identity and heritage—had been quietly tucked away.

Rediscovering Our Passion

With time and resilience, we gradually reclaimed the passion that had never truly left us. My mother returned to her embroidery, reconnecting with the artistry that binds us to our heritage. Inspired by her renewed dedication, I began exploring traditional Korean pottery, capturing its timeless elegance in my work. Although our handmade crafts aren't yet for sale, you can glimpse their beauty in the lovingly crafted props in our product photography.

Dalbit symbolizes our gentle perseverance and quiet strength. Unlike the intense brightness of the sun, moonlight softly illuminates, seamlessly blending into the night. We aspire for our brand to be just that—subtly sharing our culture, heritage, and warmth, thoughtfully and humbly.
